April on the Flower Farm

April has certainly kept us on our toes here at the flower farm.

We began the month full of excitement as work started on the log cabin – a space that will soon host our long-awaited workshops. Everything was going beautifully, and we were just beginning to imagine welcoming you all here for those first spring gatherings. Then along came Storm Dave. No sooner had we finished putting the roof on than it was taken straight back off again. A very disheartening moment, and it’s safe to say we felt back at square one. But with perspective (and gratitude that no one was hurt), we’ve picked ourselves up and, as of the 14th of April, we are starting again on the roof.

Meanwhile, progress continues across the farm. We’ve begun work on ten new growing beds, which is an exciting step forward. Once these are in place, the next job will be installing new rabbit fencing around the extended plot to protect all that fresh growth. It’s all part of steadily building a space that can flourish sustainably.

Inside the polytunnel, nature is keeping us busy in its own way. The aphids, which last year devastated the lupins, have decided to move on to the ranunculus this season. As always, we’re committed to working without chemicals or pesticides, so we’ve introduced aphid midges as a natural solution. They’ve only just arrived, so we’re giving them time to settle in, but we’re hopeful they’ll do the job. We may need to introduce a second batch in a couple of weeks to really get things under control – it’s all part of working in harmony with nature rather than against it.

On a more cheerful note, I’m absolutely delighted to share that our flower subscription service is now live on the website. You can now order bouquets online, whether you’d like a single monthly delivery for £30 or weekly flowers throughout the month for £99. Local delivery is available to selected villages, and I’m so excited to see this offering finally come to life.

And finally, workshops are just around the corner. Our first one of the year takes place on Saturday 25th April, and there are just six places remaining. We’ll be creating beautiful spring table arrangements using freshly picked flowers from the farm. It’s a chance to spend a couple of relaxed hours surrounded by flowers, with coffee, cake, birdsong, and good company – a lovely way to pause and enjoy the season. Despite a few setbacks, April has been full of growth, resilience, and new beginnings. Thank you, as always, for being part of the journey.
