May on the Flower Farm

May is always a challenging month on the flower farm, and this year has certainly been no exception. The weather has fluctuated wildly, with temperatures in the polytunnel swinging from minus one to a sweltering forty-one degrees. A late frost on the 11th of May wiped out four recently planted crops and, at times, it has tested me almost to my limit.

Yet, as is so often the way with flower farming, moments of difficulty sit side by side with moments of real beauty. The field is now beginning to burst into colour, the days are stretching beautifully long, and after many months of planning and preparation, our log cabin is finally fully functional.

This month we welcomed our very first group of ladies into the cabin for a hand-tied bouquet workshop, and seeing the space come to life was genuinely joyful. There is always a lovely moment during workshops when everyone begins quietly, perhaps a little unsure, and then gradually relaxes into the rhythm of working with flowers. By the end, the room is full of conversation, laughter and beautiful creations gathered from the field.

The cabin has always been part of the dream for Hawkenbury Flower Farm — a calm and welcoming space where people can slow down, reconnect with nature and enjoy the simple pleasure of seasonal flowers.

Celebrating British Flowers Week 2026

Founded in 2013, British Flowers Week 2026 coincides with the United Nations’ International Year of the Woman Farmer — a wonderful recognition of the many entrepreneurial women helping to shape the UK flower growing industry.

Flowers from the Farm has recently published new data demonstrating the growing demand for British-grown flowers, while British Flowers Week continues to highlight innovative growers across the country through its nationwide festival running from 15–21 June.

By choosing seasonal, sustainably grown British flowers over imported alternatives, growers and floral designers are continuing to nurture both local communities and the environment.

At Hawkenbury Flower Farm, sustainability remains at the heart of everything we do — from our no-dig growing methods and careful soil management to our commitment to chemical-free flowers and eco-friendly floristry.

I hope to welcome many of you to the farm this June.
